Community Assembly of Wakefield

Serving, supporting and protecting our local community

About Us

The Community Assembly of Walkefield is located in a cathedral city in West Yorkshire, England located on the River Calder. The name Wakefield may derive from 'Waca's field' – the open land belonging to someone named 'Waca' or could have evolved from the Old English word wacu, meaning 'a watch or wake', and feld, an open field in which a wake or festival was held.

The Battle of Wakefield took place in the Wars of the Roses, and the city was a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War. Wakefield became an important market town and centre for wool, exploiting its position on the navigable River Calder to become an inland port. In the 18th century, Wakefield traded in corn, coal and textiles. Wakefield is within the area of the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire & Yorkshire coalfield and lies on the middle coal measures and sandstones laid down in the Carboniferous period.

Community Assemblies are made up of residents concerned about a lack of democratic process at a local and national level, dedicated to preserving and asserting our inalienable rights and obligations to ourselves, the Earth and future.
