The Community Assembly of Plymouth Keyham is located in a Victorian-built area of Plymouth in the county of Devon in the Territory of Kernow. The suburb of Keyham originated as a rural manor, appearing in the Domesday Book of 1086, and was later known as Keyham Barton Farm. The land remained agricultural until the Victorian era.
Keyham is situated directly adjacent to HM Dockyard Devonport (formerly Plymouth Dock). It was historically developed in the 19th century as a residential area for workers and to house the 'Keyham Steam Yard,' an expansion of the main naval dockyard. It is now considered part of the northern section of the Naval Base.
Plymouth Dock (later renamed Devonport) originated in the 1690s as a purpose-built Royal Naval dockyard on the River Tamar. It was commissioned by King William III to counter French naval power, and was designed by Edmund Dummer. The site at Point Froward began with a stone dock (1693) and grew into a bustling town, becoming Devonport in 1824.
As one of the largest dockyards in Western Europe, HM Dockyard Devonport formed a highly specialised workforce, peaking at 14,000 employees. It has employed thousands of workers over the centuries, ranging from skilled shipwrights and Caulkers to engineers and women who entered the workforce during World War II. It continues to support the Royal Navy with maintenance, refitting and the modernisation of frigates, amphibious ships and submarines.
Community Assemblies are made up of residents concerned about a lack of democratic process at a local and national level, dedicated to preserving and asserting our inalienable rights and obligations to ourselves, the Earth and future generations.
